History
-------
BMUG Inc., one of the largest computer user groups in the world with over
13,000 members, was founded in 1984 by a diverse group of students,
faculty, and interested users. It has blossomed into a NON-PROFIT
EDUCATIONAL resource and an influential computer consumer advocacy group.
BMUG's mission focuses on helping people by educating the user and
developer, and stimulating political action. The group motto is:
"We're in the business of giving away information."
BMUG has been the genesis for ground-breaking products, and for leaders
in the computer industry. It continues to provide an open forum for a
diverse group of computer users to exchange ideas. BMUG projects often
help break down barriers, giving young and old, men and women, with
differing backgrounds, opportunities to work side-by-side.
Meetings and More
-----------------
BMUG’s endeavors center around meetings, technical help, electronic
services, publications, and consumer action. Volunteer effort, combined
with experienced staff, create a rich environment for learning and
service. BMUG is proud of the quality of its work, and the number of
people it touches.
MicroTimes magazine has listed BMUG as one of the 100 most important
influences in the computer industry, and said, "BMUG is what every user
group dreams of becoming."
Electronic Services
-------------------
The BMUG Bulletin Board System is a telecommunications service, linking
members to worldwide computer networks. A wide range of technical and
social issues are covered in the conferences and forums online, and
hundreds of files are available for members to download.
Planet BMUG (in Berkeley) and BMUG Boston use the FirstClass
graphical software with a familiar Macintosh interface. Both are multi-
line systems, with all lines running high-speed modems (14,400 bits per
second).
