  13. -------
  14. BMUG Inc., one of the largest computer user groups in the world with over
  15. 13,000 members, was founded in 1984 by a diverse group of students,
  16. faculty, and interested users. It has blossomed into a NON-PROFIT
  17. EDUCATIONAL resource and an influential computer consumer advocacy group.

  19. BMUG's mission focuses on helping people by educating the user and 
  20. developer, and stimulating political action. The group motto is:
  21. "We're in the business of giving away information."
  22.  
  23. BMUG has been the genesis for ground-breaking products, and for leaders 
  24. in the computer industry. It continues to provide an open forum for a 
  25. diverse group of computer users to exchange ideas. BMUG projects often 
  26. help break down barriers, giving young and old, men and women, with 
  27. differing backgrounds, opportunities to work side-by-side.

  30. Meetings and More

  32. BMUG’s endeavors center around meetings, technical help, electronic 
  33. services, publications, and consumer action. Volunteer effort, combined 
  34. with experienced staff, create a rich environment for learning and 
  35. service. BMUG is proud of the quality of its work, and the number of 
  36. people it touches.

  38. MicroTimes magazine has listed BMUG as one of the 100 most important 
  39. influences in the computer industry, and said, "BMUG is what every user 
  40. group dreams of becoming."

  43. Electronic Services
  44. -------------------
  45. The BMUG Bulletin Board System is a telecommunications service, linking 
  46. members to worldwide computer networks. A wide range of technical and 
  47. social issues are covered in the conferences and forums online, and 
  48. hundreds of files are available for members to download.

  50. Planet BMUG (in Berkeley) and BMUG Boston use the FirstClass 
  51. graphical software with a familiar Macintosh interface. Both are multi-
  52. line systems, with all lines running high-speed modems  (14,400 bits per 
  53. second).

  56. Membership

  58. BMUG, Inc. is a Membership organization. There are various individual and
  59. corporate rates, but the typical one is (currently) $40 annually.  
  60. This entitles you to Help Lines, News Letters, full access to any BMUG BBS 
  61. and Special Rates on The World Internet host system.
